The world’s second largest tower firm, ATC (American Tower Corporation) is in talks to acquire Gurgaon based IMIL (Independent Mobile Infrastructure Limited). Merely a year earlier, ATC had purchased Xcel Telecom for around Rs 800 crore.
Independent Mobile is present in 10 circles and having about 400 towers out of which only 125 have tenants. Generally towers are valued by their tenants and with just a little more than one fourth of towers occupied; the IMIL may not receive much valuation like that of Xcel. One of the analysts tracking the sector said that with the global meltdown and low tenancy figures, the IMIL would not be able to get valuation more than 120 crore. One spokesperson of ATC said that according to company policy, ATC did not want to comment on market speculations.
With the acquisition of Xcel Telecom,currently ATC has nearly 2,000 tower sites in 15 telecom circles. Some other biggest independent players in the country are Tata-Quippo and GTL Infrastructure Ltd with around 18,000 and 8,000 towers respectively.
