Gurgaon is all set to become the most popular city of India. With its sprawling range of commercial and residential buildings we can experience a lot of international color creeping into this city. However, Gurgaon still lacks its share of public cubs and community centers that can cater as citizen’s forum.
At present Gurgaon has only a few clubs and those can be counted on finger. The biggest and most popular club is Gymkhana Club that is situated in Sector 29. This club is owned and operated by HUDA. The club boasts of a sprawling infrastructure – a huge lawn, swimming pool, restaurant, marriage hall, gym, and other public facilities. But the sad part is that the membership to this club is limited to people who own a lot or house in HUDA. The members have to pay good amount of annual subscription that makes it out of reach of the common man.
Another set of clubs in Gurgaon is run by DLF Housing for its own residents. At present DLF Clubs exist in Phase IV, and phase III and two more are opening in DLF phase V and II. These are great places to meet people, socialize, and be with leisure but these clubs are also restricted to residents of DLF. Non residents of DLF do not stand a chance to enjoy membership of these clubs.
So if people living outside DLF and HUDA look forward to a public forum where they can socialize, meet like minded-people, indulge in some recreation and spend an enjoyable evening, what choices are they left with. As a result they throng the malls and cinema halls, or visit pubs and bars for an enjoyable evening.
With a good share of expats and NRIs making Gurgaon their home, the city definitely needs good set of public places and clubs to hang around. The city administration should encourage the growth of clubs and recreation centers that are affordable to all and safe for common man. The administration and HUDA cannot just harp on the private builders to come with exclusive facilities like clubs and public centers that are restricted to a bunch of residents only.
Gurgaon, a major hub for IT companies and MNCs has a substantial amount of corporate crowd that longs for public centers like club that can provide them and their family a safe and enjoyable place to recreate and relax. The growing trend of corporate culture in the city definitely needs social and community clubs that provide a platform for socializing and stress busting.
