Depleting Water Level in Gurgaon

Modern infrastructure development is accompanied by its own set of problems. Though Gurgaon is day by day growing as an International city with multiplying high rises and malls, the city is suffering badly when it comes to basic amenities. According a recent study the ground water level in Gurgaon is drastically depleting. Isn’t that alarming for the residents of Gurgaon.

Gurgaon has seen a sudden increase in the population during the last decade. The infrastructure of Gurgaon has not been planned in accordance with the growing population. The poor town planning has led to various environmental issues in Gurgaon. High pollution level, insufficient power, and improper waste disposal, are some of the common issues facing Gurgaon. According to experts in architecture and town planning, the area developed under Gurgaon is 8 times more than the actual area. We can well imagine the pressure of population on Gurgaon in order to handle it successfully.

To the woes of Gurgaon citizens, a recent study has shown that the ground water level in the city is considerably declining; Courtesy, the large scale of construction and growing usage of water. The results are so alarming that ten years down the line, Gurgaon will have no ground water left. As a result the Central Groundwater Authority of India (CGWA) has issued strict guidelines related to the water usage in Gurgaon for both residential and commercial use.

Steps like Rain Water Harvesting and so are recommended strongly but the citizens of Gurgaon are not taking the issue seriously. Almost all the societies still provide 24×7 water supply to their residents and there is no way to control the waste of water. The non urban areas of Gurgaon get almost 25 new borewells everyday. To administer and control the drilling of borewells, the authority has announced that before drilling a new borewell, an application will have to be submitted with the district authority. The request will only be permitted after a survey of the area and assessment of the ground water level there.

The District Administration is also planning to construct a lake in the Sector 72 that will help raise the ground water level. With all the plans in offing and the condition worsening, the residents of Gurgaon need to take the initiative and do their bit in saving the water reservoir of Gurgaon .
