Effect of Commonwealth Games on Gurgaon

Gurgaon is also a part of Commonwealth Games 2010. The millennium city is the venue for shooting competition to be held from 9th – 13th of October. We cannot rule out the effect of commonwealth Games in Gurgaon and related changes that will take place.

We know that Delhi is gearing up for CWG and a lot of money has been spent by State and Central Government to improve the infrastructure. A budget of 40000 crore has already been spent on the development of various facilities in Delhi.

Although Gurgaon is known as the international city of India, the infrastructure is still lagging behind. The city lacks good roads, street lights, organized traffic, safety measures, and hygiene. The more we discuss about the current conditions of Gurgaon roads the less it seems. Everyday travelers and residents of Gurgaon are used to frequent traffic jams and water logged streets.

With so much infrastructure problems all around Gurgaon is going to attract lot of negative publicity during the Commonwealth Games. Although the Haryana State Government has recently opened its eyes towards the stark conditions in Gurgaon, but it is near to impossible to solve the massive issues troubling the city.

A major effect of Commonwealth Games in Gurgaon is that some of the roads existing in this city are being repaired. The road leading to Sector 56, 56, 57, are being repaired in hurry. We do not know for how long the temporary patches on the road are going to work, but at the moment it all looks very rosy.

Some of the other measures that Haryana Government is taking for Commonwealth Games are:

1. A Full bore shooting range has been constructed in the CRPF Kadarpur in Gurgaon. The venue has got a state-of-the art technology with movable type electronic target system.

2. A 60-meter wide road connecting DLF Golf Course road to the shooting range has been constructed. The road passes through a village and a small stretch of the road is still kucha due to stay order claimed by villagers from Haryana Court.

3. The Government has requested the center for Air Surveillance on the pattern of Delhi during the Games.

4. The Government has requested the center for Air Surveillance on the pattern of Delhi during the Games.

5. CWG Trial runs have been held twice on Gurgaon roads to ensure smooth run of traffic on the D-Day.

6. The security has been tightened and Gurgaon police has ordered the verification of maids, rickshaw pullers, shop workers, and immigrants in the city.

7. Schools have been ordered to close down during the games to reduce the traffic on the road.

Although above mentioned measures have been taken by the Haryana Government there is a lot more that needs to be done. The main sector roads of the city are still in pathetic state and are going to cause shame during the contest.

No doubt that there are some positive effects of Commonwealth Games in Gurgaon but the administration needs to focus a lot on the development and ensure that it matches the tag of a global business city.
