Encroachment Menace in Gurgaon

Besides being one of the developed cities in India, Gurgaon is witnessing a very giant problem. The problem of encroachment on government land has become a matter of concern nowadays. This hitch has extended to such a height that it needs immediate action by the authorities.

Shopkeepers have started infringement of the government land by putting up tea stalls, barbers, tailor, dhobis, cobblers, vegetable and fruit sellers, and slum dwellers, in front of authorized shops. This has turned to be a great line of work in Gurgaon. Apparently, the troublemakers have turned the city into a nuisance by circumventing law. Furthermore, slum dwellers and hawkers have made some areas their permanent home by encroaching on Huda land.

“The encroachment pest is extended to such a degree in the markets that the pedestrians as well as the regulars feel uncomfortable while walking on the street” says Tarun, a resident. The main “sadar market” place is already narrow and additional encroachment leads to congestion in the market. One can see the dhobis or slum occupants at every nook and corner of the sector. The verandahs which are enclosed to the shops have also been rented by the shopkeeper, which has further made the crisis more intense.

The problem causes a lot of traffic jams and overcrowding in the city. The encroachment, it seems, has become an unauthorized business for shopkeepers who can mint additional money through this

“Though in the recent times Huda administration has been appraised of this problem but till date no worthwhile efforts were made. It can be gauged that the Huda administration has only indulged in issuing threats to encroachers, than taking any legal and tough action against those who have illegitimately occupied the footpaths, pavements and public places. I request the authorities to rein the corrupt officials who encourage these illegal activities” says Col Man Singh, President of Resident’s Welfare Association (RWA). The hazard will not only stain the exquisiteness of the sector but can also prove to be a security peril in the society.

If one goes through the number of warnings issued by the Huda administration and intensity of encroachments in City, then the administration have seemingly thought that their work is only to issue warnings than taking action against such un-lawful activities. Residents can only see to it as another non-fulfillment of promises made by the government.

Keeping in view the intensity of encroachment the best way to heal this problem is to extremely penalize those shopkeepers who have turned the footpaths and pavements as a big business hub.
