Gurgaon, the city of malls, is a popular haunt for shopaholics. People from Delhi, Noida, and other nearby localities travel all the way to shop here. According to regular shoppers fun of shopping in Gurgaon is unique.
When New Gurgaon came up, malls were a highlight of the city. It was a new attraction for NCR people who wanted to shop in style. Malls offer the shoppers with great national and international brands under one roof.
People found shopping in Gurgaon a great experience due to ample parking place in malls as compared to cramped markets of Delhi.
Malls attract crowd because it has multiple shops selling different types of goods like clothes, accessories, books, and many similar things. Most of them also have food courts or stand alone restaurants. So after you are tired of shopping you can savor variety of dishes in the food court.
The first few malls to come up in Gurgaon were Sahara Mall, City Center, and MGF Metropolitan. Then Delhi had only one such shopping center and that was Ansal Plaza. So the fun of shopping in Gurgaon doubled with the emergence of malls.
Along with malls came the trend of big multi-brand shops like Lifestyle, Westside, Shoppers Stop, Pantaloon, and so on. Gurgaon was one of the first cities in India to have such multi-brand stores.
I still remember the days when we used to come all the way from East Delhi when “Lifestyle” announced its annual sale every year. At that time Gurgaon was the only place to have Lifestyle store in NCR. So the fun of shopping in Gurgaon has been there since the place started developing as a millennium city.
However for many people shopping in Gurgaon is not a great experience. One of my friends staying in the city for almost 7 years still craves for markets like “Lajpat Nagar” and “Karol Bagh”. She prefers to drive down to these markets when she has to buy things for regular use, for example household goods, home furnishing, kids stuff, Indian ethnic wear, and so on. It’s true that Gurgaon completely lacks old and multi-goods market like the ones existing in Delhi.
The variety of goods available in mall shops is definitely not very large. Moreover, they are good for buying branded items. The prices are almost fixed and there is no scope of bargaining. However, it’s beneficial to shop in these shops during sale.
The only place you can visit for wholesale shopping or buying things for regular use is “Sadar Bazaar”, but as we know how unapproachable, and crowded the place is. And moreover the experience is not as satisfying as it is in old markets of Delhi.
With time shopping in Gurgaon is losing charm because malls are a common place now and exist everywhere. The city needs more usual markets that can cater to every strata of society. The fun of shopping in Gurgaon can be revived with emergence of such markets.
