Increased Overall Turnout in Gurgaon Assembly Polls

55% turnout recorded by constituency in contrast to the average polling of 62.75% contributed by other four assembly segments in the district. Though the turnout was higher than the last time’s 47.87% polling average, urban average polling was stunningly low, recorded to be around 30-40 %. In contrast, villagers showed better response towards assembly elections.

This dip in urban areas polling was a result of irregularities noted in the election process. Many eligible voters could not vote simply because their name was not listed in the voter list. Many of them had to take several round around various polling booths to locate the right center for voting.

However, we can attribute an overall increase to the increased effort of several RWAs in nudging and encouraging people to vote by means of public announcement system around the city. Also, security guards of various apartments were asked to call up each resident to remind them of voting. A public holiday was even declared to facilitate working people in voting. Yet, it seems urban people are too busy to vote.

Inadequate facilities have again left a sour experience of voting for public. All the efforts of improving assembly poll experience for Guragon people didn’t seem enough to please them. Many discrepancies were revealed in the electoral rolls. Unorganized facilities were proven to be insufficient to cater to the needs of emerging voters. Missing and deleted names and irregularities in the voter list took away the enthusiasm of voters.

Authorities explained their arrangements about 18 recent voter registration information centers across the city with computerized facilities for voters to efficiently search their names. Added to it was voter-assistance booths set up at eight locations in DLF and Palam Vihar, but could not suffice to the need.

Though polling went peaceful, people noticed there wasn’t a strict regime for entrants in polling booth. A lady with a 4-year old son walked in for voting without being stopped. Though she said her intentions were to educate her son, however, such lapse could be threatening to voters and she should have been stopped by authorities.

Residents were put down by lack of active involvement of authorities in facilitating them in voting experience. Yet there were others who didn’t bother to use the given holiday for its purpose and had better time cribbing about facilities being not enough. If city like Gurgaon, with educated people will only reflect polling turnout to be only 55%, lower than other districts in Haryana.
