In chic apartments and society in skyscraping building of Gurgaon new urban nuclear family culture is emerging. With rushing lifestyle, high ambitions and race to catch up with society, parents have no time for kids. Leave apart kid, they don’t even have time for their parents.
We see a growing number of senior citizens living alone in an apartment. Ask them and they’ll tell you what they have got in return to their dedicated parenting, a lonely apartment. With no one to help and share their responsibilities in old age, senior citizens find old-age homes better than apartments.
An old-age home may not provide as good comforts as chic apartments in Gurgaon, but they definitely provide a shoulder to rely on in need. But what do they do with their hard-earned money, when they have thought of living their retired life lavishly. It is a hard choice to make, when it comes to compromising on lifestyle and living for their needs.
However, Silver Oak Condominium Association has resolved the senior citizens’ problem by taking an initiative towards lending a helping hand to them. The association has taken several steps in facilitating senior citizens living in the Silver Oak Condominium, catering to their needs in emergency or otherwise. There are many aged people living alone in these apartments because either their children are settled abroad or have abandoned them.
P N Raina, Secretary, Silver Oak Condominium has carefully planned the implementation details of all the facilities by first collecting data on number of flats occupied by senior citizens. The society has come up with the library so that senior citizens get the opportunity of reading books and interacting with others. A librarian is also appointed to manage the books, usually contributed by the residents of the society.
Also, talk sessions are organized for all age groups to actively participate in the discussions, especially senior citizens.
Society has also taken care of medical help being provided to senior citizens so that they don’t have to run around for medical assistance in any case. A physiotherapist and a general physician visit the society on daily basis and charges nominal fees. Senior citizens, often troubled by joint pains and requiring general checkup of old age, are greatly benefited from these visits.
Not only this, society has instructed all the guards to be always upfront about helping senior citizens, whether it is a change of bulb in their apartment or submitting their electricity and telephone bills.
Senior citizens living in silver Oak are very contended with their lifestyle and with the care shown by the society they feel obliged as well as pampered as said by Vinod Gupta, senior citizen of the society.
Now this is called setting an example to follow! Silver Oak Condominium Association has shown the urban culture how to respect our elders.
