Gurgaon Garbage Plant after a Year

After a year of demonstration and protests from DLF city residents, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon has finally relieved the residents of the stink from garbage dumping site at traffic signal of Faridabad Road.

A former garbage site in their locality was shut down by the MCG and consequentially the traffic signal became the dumping ground. Unbearable stink had forced residents, including cricketer Yuvraj Singh, to launch protests and demonstration a year back. But only after active involvement from media, Hindustan Times, by conducting regular campaigns and reports on this issue did the government officials moved from the chairs to look into the matter.

On 1st Nov, the Haryana Day, the MCG finally let the residents to breathe some fresh air by moving 200 tonnes of solid waste collected from the city at alternative site at Bandhwari village, selected as an earmarked solid waste management facility by the Haryana Government.

The Bandhwari village site is to be converted into a bio-mediation plant which will handle 1000 tonnes of garbage on daily average. Presently, after the land was released from HUDA, the plant is treating and reducing 30% of the waste volume to get rid of the foul smell. Plant reservoirs are designed to hold 6000 tonnes of garbage and will be operational from January 1.

A major relief to the residents came from closing of the dumping ground at Faridabad Road from Nov 1. Also Kullar said, “We have dug trenches and erected large fences around the site to prevent people from dumping garbage there.” Moreover, they have put up notices and warning boards for penalty of 5000 rupees, forfeiture of trucks and jail for two years in case of violation. This should do for unauthorized dumping.

The 31 acre land allotted by HUDA for building of this plant will also cater to the garbage dumping needs of NIT Faridabad from Jan 1. It will collect almost 125 tonnes of garbage from there, Kullar said.

Officials also informed that they have also tied up with private Garbage Collection Company, although no formal pact has been signed till now.

So much for the advancement of technology and modern civilization, that our government needs a year for providing the citizens with as basic needs as garbage collection facility. It can still be questioned that had the residents of DLF city not taken efforts to protest and media had not shown interest, the government officials would have been least bothered with the public’s worries.

Government sure has lands for glitzy malls and skyscraping buildings but for primal need of sanity and environment protection, they prefer to compromise with public health by using the roadsides as garbage dumping ground. Not even after the site being christened by the residents as Kachra Chowk, the officials were affected.

It is time to look beyond the few high speed links and chic-looking offices in Gurgaon and deal with more basic problems and upgrade grass root level of infrastructure first.
