Gurgaon Metro Station Going Green

This isn’t only about the flowers and plants set at the metro station and its surrounding, but the Gurgaon metro station at sector-29 will be in true sense environment friendly. The metro station, proposed to be completed in next January, will have the environment certificate. The terminal station will be Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) first building with Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) certification.

So much for the technicalities and formal certificates. But what does it imply to a common man, when it is said he’ll be hopping down on a Green metro station?

The six floor metro station to be completed by January 2010 is being constructed in consultation with The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) for infusing environment friendly techniques for energy consumption and preservation. Is your building saving energy? This metro station with its proud green tag can definitely say so. How?

Not only the metro station will be a shopping and entertainment centre but the civil architecture underlying its construction uses the eco-logic for its huge energy consumption. For one, it would make use of the clay tiles to keep the station thermally insulated from the weather. The design of the building includes usage of the climatic factors like wind loads, solar energy and air movement patterns.

Further, the water would be conserved in running the mall as much as possible. Waste water will be recycled and rain water harvested for the water preservation. DMRC’s officials also stated that the water consumption for the purpose of building construction would be minimized to the least possible level.

That’s not all; natural light will be utilized inside the metro station to light up the building, further cutting back on the electricity consumed by the artificial lights. Indoor noise levels are being designed to conform to the levels prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

This combined effort by DMRC and TERI for putting together the architectural and engineering details for this station, infusing the energy conservation parameters in its design has won accolades. TERI will be issuing the national green rating GRIHA certificate after its successful completion, following the well-laid procedure of the said norms. The completion certificate will be issued by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA)

However, DMRC has yet not made plans for applying for the international green rating from the organization like LEEDS by United States Green Building Council.

For being constructed next to the HUDA’s own office complex – HUDA City Centre, the metro station will be named as HUDA City Centre Metro Station.

The structural layout of the building as informed by DMRC’s officials will have three and half floors elevated above the station, like four other metro station on Gurgaon line, and the rest three floors below it including the basement. 21,000 square meters area of the basement will be turned into the single level parking. And as usual, lifts and escalators will be provided for the entry to the station as well as to all other levels. Also, entry to the station from the two sides at the ground level will be connected to the basement via subways.

With DMRC coming up with such innovative designs for the metro station, the metro has a long way to go. Clubbing the shopping centre and a roof-top cafeteria at the top of the building, the station is soon to become the meeting point of youngsters just like the matro station at Rajiv Chowk in Delhi.

I am happy to read about the Green Metro Station using elements of nature (eco-logic) coming up at Gurgaon. I would be happy that it’s not an exception but applies uniformly to all projects coming up there; metro stations or residential projects, whatever. Planting of trees on a big scale, well laid out public parks, rainwater harvesting with a good garbage disposal system need to be done as integral and necssary ingredients of a healthy and vibrant city. Being in proximity to Delhi, it can be marketed as a model city for an even and nature-friendly development in other parts of the country. As climate is a big concern today, we need to scrupulousy implement and not just discuss these issues if we want a better tomorrow for all of us.
