With upcoming elections, assembly polls on Oct 13, 2009, citizen of Gurgaon are in complaint mode. Mission Gurgaon Development, which claims to be people’s movement, has prepared a dossier, listing the varied aspects of infrastructure where the government is lacking.
The association alleges that though a section of Gurgaon has developed itself into a corporate hub of BPOs and international MNCs with flashy malls and skyscraping building, the rest is still being overlooked by the government. This wide discrepancy has led the citizens to raise questions and demands for providing basic amenities, leave all development.

Despite the fact that Gurgaon district is exceedingly boosting the economy of Haryana state, by generating revenue of whopping amount of 8500 crore, as stated by Mission Gurgaon Development, the government has failed in developing the required infrastructure and civic amenities.
Old Gurgaon are still plagued by bumpy roads, full of potholes, and salty water supply. Gurgaon Railway Station is in even worse condition; where living standards are nowhere near to dazzling private builders’ sectors. Traffic jams are rampant, especially during the monsoon.
Electricity shortage is no new idea, yet the dossier highlights that despite the annual revenue of 200 crore, power department has fallen short in fulfilling the needs of growing population in Gurgaon. Even education in Gurgaon has not been able to cater the needs of thousands of students flocking for college admission every year. With just 3 colleges in Gurgaon district, people are seeking accountability from state government.
It is not impressive to know that Gurgaon administration is divided in 5 major departments, namely the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Police Commissionariat, Municipal Corporation, HUDA and the power department which seems to work in non-existent co-ordination manner. And the consequences are bared for all to see.
The question here is not only why state governments are lacking in fulfilling their promises but also why the citizens are reminded of government’s behavior at the peak time of elections? Though they face these problems everyday, the people in Gurgaon has not made necessary efforts to communicate their needs effectively to the state government, as usual, taking a backseat and criticizing.
