27th March 2009, Friday

Members of the Millennium Parents Association and a large number of parents marched to the office of deputy commissioner Dipti Umashankar against the sudden fee hike in the city’s schools. They also gave a memorandum to seek her involvement in the issue to resolve it. Parents said that the schools had increased the fee because there was hardly any involvement of the parents in the school management. So, they demanded a minimum of 50% of representation of parents in the management of schools.
A revision in the school fees had been demanded by the parents earlier also but no action was taken said Dileep Mehta, VP, Millennium Parents Association. He also said that with all the big schools now smaller schools have also increased their fee exorbitantly. Even some of the schools have doubled the fee making it difficult to send their children in the private schools. However the school authorities said that the hike in the fee was in order to implement the 6th pay commission recommendation on teachers’ salaries.
The State government said that they could not do much because it is the school management to decide over such issues as they are private businesses. Meanwhile DC, Umashankar raised some hopes and said that they have called a meeting with school representatives, parents and education department to find a solution.
