Gurgaon to Alwar

The city of Alwar is known as The Tiger Gate of Rajasthan, nestled between clusters of small hills of the Aravalli range. Perched on the most famous of these hills is a huge ancient fort that whispers tales of the rich Delhi. The Alwar District is located towards the northern-eastern tail of Rajasthan. The district is protected from all sides by the Aravallis. Bharatpur district towards the north-east, Jaipur in the south-west, Gurgaon (Haryana) in the north, Mahendragarh District (Haryana) in the north-west and Sawai - Madhopur district towards the south surrounds the district of Alwar.

The district headquarter is located in Alwar. There are several postulates about the derivation of the district’s name. According to some people’s belief Alwar was derived from Aravalpur, while others say that it was named after the Salvar tribe that stayed here.
Alwar boost one of the finest wild life sanctuaries in Rajasthan- Sarika, which is an excellent tiger country.

The Bala Fort:
This huge fort stands 304 meters above the city and 595 meters above the sea level. The fort has several gates-Suraj pole, Laxman pole, jai pole, Chand Pole, Kishan Pole and Andheri Gate. And there are some remains of Jal Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal, Salim Sagar, Suraj Kund and many other temples.

City Palace or Vinay Vilas Mahal: This 18th century palace is a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture. While the ground floor has been converted into government office and district court, the upper apartment is a museum at present.

Government Museum: The museum has the optimum collection of Mughal and Rajput paintings dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries and some rare ancient manuscripts in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Sanskrit. Waqiat-I-Babri’ (autobiography of Mughal emperor Babar) ‘Gulistan’ (the garden of roses), and Bostan (the garden of spring) are some of the famous ones in the collection. It also contains the copy of the great epic ‘Mahabharata’ painted by the artists of the Alwar School.

Sagar: Behind the City Palace, there is an artificial lake built in 1815 A.D. by Maharaja Vinay Singh with few temples by the side of its banks.

Vihar (Company Garden): During the reign of Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh in 1868 A.D. a beautiful garden was laid down. The garden contains an enchanting setting called ‘Shimla’ which was built by Maharaja Mangal Singh in 1885 A.D. The lush green surroundings and the chilled shades make it the pleasant visiting spot during summers.

Jaipur is the nearest airport to Alwar, situated at a distance of 125 Km and well connected to all the major cities of India. Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, and Sahara are the main airlines that connect jaipur to many cities. Tourists coming from Gurgaon can easily travel by air and can hire a taxi form Jaipur to Alwar.

The Indian Railways are the best option a tourist can ever have for traveling within India as one can get to know the cultural diversity of the country. Multiple rail connections are available to Alwar from Delhi. Important trains are Shatabdi Express (New Delhi-Alwar- Ajmer); Super fast Express (New Delhi- Alwar- Ajmer); Intercity Express (Delhi Sarai Rohilla – Alwar - Jaipur); Marudhar Express (Varanasi – Alwar - Jodhpur); Mandore Express (Delhi Sarai Rohilla – Alwar - Jodhpur).
