Amritsar is situated in the state of Punjab situated in the northern belt of Amritsar, which is very close to the border of Pakistan. Amritsar is just 32 km east of Lahore in Pakistan. The languages spoken here are Punjabi dialect of Maajhi, Hindi, Urdu and English. It is a very religious city with the Sikh’s spiritual and cultural religion dominating the region.
Amritsar means ‘holy pool of nectar’ derived from the name of pool which is around Golden Temple. It is a city of Sikh’s who are proud of the city and the unique and beautiful Gurdwara. The Golden Temple known as ‘Harmandir Sahib’ was built by the fourth Sikh Guru- Guru Ramdaas Ji and was completed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, his successor in 1601.
Golden Temple is the primary attraction in Amritsar. For Sikh’s, it is the most important religious place. From the whole of India, thousands of pilgrims come to see this stunning complex. They are excited to see this Temple as they usually see it on television only. Here you will find many people who will tell you about their customs and religion, and will show you the whole temple describing it in details.

Jallianwala Bagh is the site of 1919 Amritsar massacre, which is just 5 minute walk from Golden temple. There was a fire by British Indian Army soldiers on 13th April on gathering of unarmed men, women and children. 1579 people were killed in the 1650 rounds of firing which lasted for 10 minutes. Dr. Rajendra Prasad built a memorial on the site on 13th April, 1961.

Tourism, farm produce, carpets and fabrics, service trades, light engineering and handicrafts are the main commercial activities of Amritsar. Amritsar is known and famous for its culture and food. The best time to visit Amritsar is in between the months of October to March during winters.
How to reach?
- Road transport is easily available to reach Amritsar from Gurgaon. You can take a bus from Gurgaon to Amritsar, which will directly drop you at Amritsar. And if the way doesn’t suits you then take the bus for Dhaula Kuan in Delhi. From there take the bus to Amritsar. Another way is that you can hire a taxi to Amritsar. It will take only 6-7 hours from New Delhi via NH-1 to reach your destination.
- You can go by Rail transport too. Take the train from Nizamuddin or Old Delhi station which will leave you right at Amritsar station.
- For Air transport, you can reach at Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi. Take the required flight from there which will drop you at Raja Sansi International Airport, just 11 km away from Amritsar. From there take a bus or a taxi to cover up 15-20 minutes way to reach your final destination, Amritsar.
