Bharatpur is known as an eastern gateway of Rajasthan. Bharatpur was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in year 1733. Bharatpur was once a well-fortified city, and the capital of a kingdom ruled by Jat maharajas who were located in Mewat region.
The chief attraction of Bharatpur is Keoladeo Ghana National Park. The previous name of the park was Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The Keoladeo National Park was initially a Royal hunting ground covering 29 square kilometers area at the time of British Raj. Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a reserve that offers protection to faunal species as well. This sanctuary is also inhabited by Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Boar and water birds.
Another main tourist attraction of Bharatpur is the famous Lohagarh Fort. The Lohagarh Fort was earlier known as Bharatpur Fort which was conceived and designed by Maharaja Suraj Mal. There are three palaces within the fort, they are known as Kishori Mahal, Kothi Khas and Mahal Khas. It is a fusion of the Mughal and Rajput sketch of architecture. The fort remained unconquered despite several attacks by the British regime.
The Government Museum is a rich collection of exquisitely carved sculptures, artifacts and ancient inscriptions, which provide a glimpse of the past royal splendor of Bharatpur. An early morning boat trip or a late evening one is quite a pleasing experience to check out the hidden surprises of Bharatpur.
