Bhimtal is situated at a distance of 22 kilometers from Nainital and is in the heart of Kumaon’s Lake District and a convenient base for excursion.
Bhimtal is the largest lake in the district of Nainital, and is 1701 meters by 265 meters, and 265 meters longer than Naini Lake. It is one of the most popular hill stations in the Kumaun range of the Himalayas. It is situated at an altitude of 1370 meters above the sea level.
Bhimtal retains its pristine glory with of its crystal clear lake and hills surrounding from all sides. Bhimtal is a place for a quite holiday with lovely dappled paths, ravines chained with dog rose and wild raspberry, and citrus trees hung with fruits. Here, you will experience the silence and tranquility missing at other hill stations.
Bhimtal came into existence when the mighty Bhima of the Pandavas in Mahabharata dug the earth to get water for quenching their thirst during their vanvas. He dug the earth from this place and thus the lake formed.

A small town in the hills of Kumaun, Nainital is a lovely hill station surrounded by mountains on three sides. Earlier it was called as the City of 60 lakes or ‘Chakta’ due so many lakes. - Naina Devi Temple
A temple dedicated to Sati called the Naina Devi temple is built on the northern side of the Naini Lake. - Naini Lake
Naini Lake or Naini Taal, the beautiful blue green lake is located in the district of Nainital. It is from Naini Lake that the city of Nainital has been named. - Nakuchiatal
Situated at an altitude of 1,219 m, Naukuchiatal is picturesque lake. It is nine corners lake as you can judge easily from the name. 26 km away from Nainital, Naukuchiatal attracts resident and migratory birds, which makes it a bird watchers paradise. - Snow View Trek
The Snow view point is located at a height of 2270 meters above sea level. One can reach there by the ropeway or by the ponies available at Mallital.

One can easily travel by car in 7 hrs to Bhimtal. All you have to do is follow this route: Start at ISBT road (3.79 kilometers) take NH 24 and continue towards Muradabad (153.11 kilometers), proceed towards Rampur (32 kilometers), turn towards Rudrapur on SH 87(47 kilometers), go straight towards Haldwani(32 kilometers) and last but not the least proceed towards Bhimtal on SH 37(25 kilometers).
Bhimtal is 21 kilometers from Kathgodam railway station.
Kathgodam is 8 hours of train run from Sarai Rohella (Old Delhi). Two trains are directly available. Ranikhet Express leaves Delhi at 10.50 p.m. to reach Kathgodam at 6.15 a.m. (next morning). And the other one is Sampark Kranti, leaves Delhi at 3.30 p.m. to reach Kathgodam by 10.30 p.m. the same night.
