Dehra Dun is an attraction for most of the tourists coming from various parts of India as well as the rest of the world. It is the capital of the state of Uttranchal located at the foothills of the Himalayas. The place lies at around 2,250ft above the sea level in the picturesque Doon Valley. Nearest hill station for Dehra Dun is Mussoorie which is approximately only 34kms away and the holy places like Haridwar and Rishikesh are also located at the nearby surroundings.

The reason behind its popularity is the natural beauty and serenity of the place and other adventurous activities like trekking and hill climbing offered to the mountaineers. Most of the trekkers prefer to travel towards the Garhwal Himalayas and others may follow their journey to a nearest place called Chakrata. One can even witness the ancient beauty of 450 B.C by moving only a few miles as Dakpathar and Kalsi and the great Ashoka’s pillar are located near Dehra Dun.
Dehra Dun is a collection sacred place of all the Indian religions. At the distance of around 51kms, Paonta Sahib is situated. The Gurudwara is built near the river Yamuna and the devotees have a belief that Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru wrote some part of the Dasam Granth. Another ritual symbol is the Hindu temple named Tapkeshwar Temple which is located at the outskirts of the city of Derhra Dun. It is Lord Shiva’s temple with the strict rituals of tap. Again between the main areas of the temple, chilled waters of a holy river passes by.
Forest Research Institute is also located in this city. Inside the institute only, the Botanical garden is an attraction for many travelers. Two adventurous picnic spots have been made on the way to Mussorie 8kms away from Dehra Dun named Malsi Deer Park and the Robbers Cave. The Malsi Park is an abode to little and gentle deers who are found playing and floating freely on the grasses and suddenly starts disappearing on even a slightest sound whereas the Robbers cave is significant for the stream of waters. There is some magical element here as the water in the stream disappears suddenly and then appears again but a short distance away.

The forest of Dehra Dun
Dehra Dun covers a distance of around 265km’s from Gurgaon and 258km’s from Delhi. NH58 is the straight road leading toward Dehra Dun from Roorki to Meerut. The road named NH72 A also leads to Dehra Dun but via Chhutmalpur and Mohand. There are many buses that facilities easy traveling by road but if one wishes to travel through rail, the city is linked properly with other major cities. Direct buses are available from Delhi as well as Gurgaon. Sometimes the timing are not properly scheduled for trains from Gurgaon so it would be better if you’ll prefer going to Delhi first and then take the train from the New or Old Delhi railway stations. The convenient trains are Shatabdi Express, Doon Express, Mussorie Express etc.
For necessary information, many centers have now been opened at the stations but to be on a safe side, try and make your booking through internet only that would reduce the risk of any sort of inconvenience.
For people traveling by Air, the nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport located in Dehra Dun only. Many direct flights are available every week from both the Indira Gandhi and Palam Airport.
