In year 1685, Guru Govind Singh ji (10th guru), son of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur (9th guru) on the way to Anandpur Sahib took a halt at Paonta Sahib and lived there for four years and wrote Dasam Granth there.

Its original name was paontika. In Hindi paon means feet and tika means stable. And because the horse of Guru Ji stopped there on the way to Anandpur so he decided to rest there only. Guru Govind Singh set his foot at this place that is why this place was named as paonta sahib.

Yamuna River is very silent while passing through the gurudwara. There is a story behind this silence. Once, Guru Govind Singh requested river Yamuna to calm down as he was not able to concentrate while writing the granth. The river followed his advice and changed its ferocious nature to the mild one near Paonta Sahib. And it is noticeable even today also.

There is a museum displaying historic architecture and weapons of old times and memorial of Rishi Kalpi. This place is of great importance for Sikhs.

Climate during the summers is pleasant while winters are bit colder than plains. This religious cum tourist destination is favorable among tourists round the year because of its moderate climate.

You can easily reach Paunta Sahib by road, from Gurgaon by taxi or bus. From New Delhi, take NH-1, straight to Panipat (86kms), then straight to Karnal (35kms),then to Pipli(31kms),turn right to SH, go straight to Yamuna Nagar(42kms), then to Khizrabad (35kms) and reach Paonta Sahib by going straight(32 kms). Himachal road transport corporation buses are also easily available.

Nearest railway station is Ambala and Dehradun to Paunta Sahib. From the railway station taxis and buses are easily available for Paunta Sahib. You can easily travel by train through Gurgaon or Delhi.

And if you want to travel by air the nearest airport to Paunta Sahib is Chandigarh and Dehradun. Taxis and tourist cars are available for Delhi airport from Gurgaon as well as from Chandigarh and Dehradun for Paunta Sahib.
