Renuka Lake is the largest lake in himachal; Shaped like a sleeping woman, the lake has the circumference of 2.5 kilometers. This placid stretch of water is fed by underground springs. The surrounding hills are padded with lush green forests that support a large variety of flora and fauna.

According to the legends, the sage Jamadagni, incensed with his wife Renuka ordered his son Parashuram to cut off his mother’s head.

Parashuram, being an obedient son, did so and the sage pleased with his son’s compliance granted him a boon. Parashuram asked immediately for his mother’s life, thereby every year a fair is held in the month of November to celebrate the immortality of Renuka and her son. It lasts for a week in which cultural programs and folk dances are organized for the entertainment of tourists. People living nearby attend the fair; chants praise of the two immortals and take a dip in the sacred water.

With a circumference of 3214 m, Renuka Lake is the beautiful and largest lake in Himachal. It is situated at a height of 672m above the sea-level and is spread over an area of 2.5 km.

Another lake also exists near renuka lake, the Parshurama Lake. Both the Lakes have temples built around them and the main temple is dedicated to goddess Renuka. Its crystal clear water and beautiful sloping surroundings command a panoramic view of the lake with just a road dividing its terraced gardens from the waters. Boating, fishing and trekking are the additional attractions of Renuka Lake that attracts large number of adventurous tourists from all over the country.
