Tarikhet is a small village near Ranikhet and is closely associated with the history of India’s freedom struggle.

A small hut now known as Gandhi kuti where Mahatma Gandhi “our bapu” the great lover of peace and non-violence and the father of our nation stayed for a length of time during the freedom movement. He came here in search of peace of mind which he found.

Non- cooperation movement was started by Bhagirath Pandey and his associates in this region by establishing Prem Vidyalaya, which was visited by Gandhiji in year 1929.

Now as a developing area Gandhi kuti and Prem Vidyalaya are the main attractions of this place from where we get the feeling to know the history of India and all the things related to the period of independence. Tarikhet was the main center for the activities that took place during freedom struggle. One gets anxious to know what all had happened here at the time of freedom struggle.

One more attracting place is famous Golu Devta temple, regularly visited by many devotees and tourists in Kumaon region.

One should avoid visiting Tarikhet during monsoons that is mainly in the months July and August; rains have been the cause to landslides.

Even though a small village located near Ranikhet which does not have an airport or a railway station of its own, it is easily accessible. The nearest airport happens to be at PantNagar (Nainital), at a distance of 127 kilometers.

The nearest railhead for this small village (tarikhet) is Kathgodam, at a distance of 92 kilometers. The well linked road network connects Ranikhet with other nearby tourist’s places.
