Thanedar is at a height of 8,000 feet. It is slightly higher than Shimla (7,400 feet) and is located amidst the scenic apple orchards in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. Thanedar is famed as the fruit bowl of Himachal Pradesh as apples rule in this fruit bowl. At thanedar the sloppy regions can be spotted with apple trees along with their greenish branches covered with elegant, delicate blossoms and loaded with flourished red apples.
It was here in Kotgarh near Thanedar that in 1916 Samuel Stokes, a social worker from Philadelphia brought the first apple saplings and adoted this place as his home. He planted first apple seed and the legacy of apples in India started growing. Thus, thanedar and kotgarh are famous for being home to one of the famous apple plantations of the country. Thanedar’s apples are used in preparing most delicious wines, jams and pickles.

- Tani-Jubbar Lake which is Famous for ‘Nag Devta’ temple built along the lake. The lake is 6 Kilometers away from thanedar.
- Hatu Peak situated at an altitude of 11,000 ft, offering a panoramic view of the snowline is 15 Kilometers away.
- St.Mary’s Church, one of the oldest churches in India was built in 1843 at Kotgarh.
- Parmjyotir Temple is 1 Km away from thanedar. The temple is built in the pahari style.
- The Hatu Peak which is 3136 mt high, offers a panoramic view of the pir-pinjal and the dhauladhar ranges of Himalayas.
- The Hatu Mata Temple is very popular with the locals during the local fairs in September and October which is located on the ridge of the top.
- Banjara Camp near Thanedar provides many adventurous activities like trekking, nature walks and rock climbing.
