Gurgaon, known as the international city of India, boasts of tall buildings and big corporate names. But is it actually even close to a world class city? That’s a question that leaves all the residents and visitors of Gurgaon blank.
All those who stay in Gurgaon know very well about the pathetic traffic conditions of this city. Everyday traffic jams, frequent road accidents, and complete lack of public transport are some of the prominent features of this international city.
Big and large names in Construction business – DLF, Unitech, and Ansal, have dotted the landscape of Gurgaon with huge and state of the art residential complexes. It’s great to stay in well equipped apartments with great features like 24 x 7 security, full power back up, gym, swimming pool, club house, and convenience store. However, the challenge begins when we step out of our homes for some fun on Gurgaon roads.
Last week I planned a movie together with my kids in DT Cinemas at City Center. It was an evening show about to begin at 6:00 pm. We started 30 minutes before from DLF Phase IV thinking it will take barely 15 minutes to reach and parking will take another 10 minutes. The weather was amazing and rains were expected anytime. As soon as we sat in car it started raining which doubled our joy. However our joy soon vanished when we hit a jam packed MG Road. The movie was good except the first 30 minutes that we missed. I am sure all the residents of Gurgaon have a sense of Déjà vu.
Traffic jams caused due to rains is a common feature in Gurgaon. The potholed roads become waterlogged causing slow traffic and as a result jam packed roads. Due to pathetic drainage system water logging is quick and common in Gurgaon. Rains and traffic jam has become synonymous for Gurgaon. People long for rains but dread the aftermath.
It is true that HUDA (Haryana Urban Development Authority) is not doing its bit to improve the infrastructure of Gurgaon. But has it ever occurred to us that as responsible citizens of this city we can also do our bit.
By taking simple measures like car pool or using office transport (if available), we can reduce the number of cars present on Gurgaon roads. One of the major reasons for traffic snarls in Gurgaon is dense traffic. Every house has 1-3 cars run separately by each member. We need to accept the fact that Gurgaon roads are not equipped to handle heavy traffic.
Another thing that is majorly responsible for traffic jams is undisciplined driving. If all of us stick to our lanes and do not come from a wrong direction, we can actually contribute to a much efficient and systematic movement of traffic.
We must do our bit and strive to make Gurgaon actually a world class city. Although there is less that we can do until the administration wakes up and takes drastic measures.
