Gurgaon’s water-logged roads raise infrastructure issues

Heavy rains on Thursday, 10th sept 09, throughout Delhi/NCR and Gurgaon has left public annoyed and baffled. The downpour was in action since previous night and continued till late afternoon. Though it was a relief, from the scorching heat, in the beginning. However, later it became a hassle for office goers and daily commuters, when they were faced with the problem of heavy traffic jams and water logging.

Continuous showers soon became a sign of trouble when the National Expressway, connecting Delhi and Gurgaon, was jammed with more vehicles than could be handled. Water-logging in the major areas has left public annoyed with the government as well as the maintenance officials of the Expressway. HUDA sectors were completely blocked. And public complained about the transport facilities when they were unable to reach offices on time.

Main arterial links were also heavily logged and submerged. Public traveling by personal convince faced the biggest of troubles when their vehicles were bogged down in the middle of heavy water level on roads. Three-hour long traffic jams has prompted certain questions about the basic infrastructural amenities.

And as the blame is tossed around the court, the general public is left to suffer the consequences. Not only were the office-goers in trouble but residents too were slapped with major drain blockade. The surrounding region in HUDA sector apartments were submerged in water too, causing chaos and rage among Gurgaon citizens.  Residents are worried about accumulating water, which may remain stagnant, and the rising danger of diseases. Few of them had a feel of showers from their very own ceilings and walls of the apartments. Troubled and helpless, people are seeking answers.

With no sign of relief from the nature downpour, questions are being raised and fingers are being pointed. As promised by the government as well as private officials, the drains and bore holes are not yet in place and in sufficient amount. However, certain corporate builders like DLF are now using private pumps to drain out the water from low-lying areas in their jurisdiction. As cited by the national news channels and newspapers, VP of DS constructions feels that they have limited resources and need co-operation, and HUDA sectors were supposed to  provide the main drain in their area.

However less it rains in Gurgaon, the question to be asked is whether the government feels responsible towards its citizens and providing the basic amenities? Or is it just waiting for the weather and mood of the public to settle down? Irrespective of the weather problems and public resentment, the government should be able to fill-in these holes. And start digging few on the roads too, to drain out the accumulated water on streets.

nothing is going to happen till the govt. decides to make the cotractors building sub-standarad roads accountable and blacklist these individuals rather than their companies because they emerge again under a different name. corruption is looking us in the face and yet we do not want to stand up against it.nobody from the outside is going to help us.
