Shopkeepers and locals protested on Monday against the city administration’s decision to remove encroachment from the IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon. In fury all the protesters burned the effigy of additional deputy commissioner Praveen Kumar who was the in-charge of the drive. According to sources, the buildings were demolished even after the shop owners had obtained stay order against demolition from Haryana and Punjab High Court. They alleged that Kumar misbehaved with the people and misused his power.
On the other hand, Kumar said that he was just complying by the orders of High Court and was doing his duty as the chairman of the anti-encroachment committee. He also said that according to a petition filed in Supreme Court by Land Acquisition Collector there should not be any kind of encroachment within 30 meters along the highway. So the stay order does not hold any value.
The demonstrators had carried out a march from IFFCO Chowk to Mini Secretariat and there they met deputy commissioner Dipti Umashankar and asked her to take some action against the erring official. However, according to local police the area near the IFFCO Chowk has turned into a crime hub and the decision of removing encroachment from here will help in restoring law and order.
