Mining Banned in Gurgaon by Supreme Court

Friday 8th May

Environment and ecology are national and valuable assets declared by the court.
In 2004, the apex court had banned all the activities regarding the mining within the 5 km area of our national capital. Supreme Court has declared that there should be no mining in Aravallis ranges in the districts of Gurgaon, Faridabad and Mewat in Haryana because Aravalli mountains are in an environmentally sensitive area. Aravallis are old mountains of Peninsular India. Any activity related to mining and forest felling can be damaging in the long run.

Chief Justice K G Balakrishan, who is the member of forest bench of the apex court took this decision because Aravallis is an area where operations are not allowed due to the principle of sustainable development. K G Balakrishnan. Justices Arijit Pasayat and S H Kapadia who are also a part of this bench have upheld this decision. Justice Kapadia writes, “This court has tried to balance mining activity on one hand and protection of the environment on the other hand”.
