In spite of the tall super structures and glitzy malls, Gurgaon has failed to conjure up to the image of a decent and world class city. Out of the many infrastructure related issues, poor drainage system in Gurgaon gives jitters to its residents. The problem raises its ugly head in monsoon, though leads to a number of troubles throughout the year.
Gurgaon has attracted a large number of MNCs, IT Companies, and huge residential complexes, by posing itself as the millennium city of India. Residents have bought property worth crores in hope to have a decent and organized life in Gurgaon. But the truth is that as soon as one steps out of his sophisticatedly maintained society and steps on Gurgaon roads, the whole scenario changes.
Poor drainage system of Gurgaon raises its ugly head in monsoons that leads to water logging and overflowing drains. The residents of Gurgaon have faced a horrible road and traffic condition due to improper drainage system in the city. Although the authorities promised a proper storm water drainage system, there is nothing in place till now.
Monsoon 2010, gave nightmares to Gurgaon citizens. Long traffic jams, threat of dengue and malaria, open man holes, are some of the few issues that the residents of this international city had to combat with. A distance of 2km took 1 hour to reach when it rained in the city.
Even people staying in tall buildings had to face the toll as the water crept in the basement of the buildings affecting the power generators, lifts, and water pumps. The worst affected areas are DLF colonies in Phase I, NH 8, and M G Road. Most of the low lying colonies in HUDA sectors were also facing huge and prolonged water logging. The administration failed to flush out the water logged areas leading to life threats and horrible living conditions. Private players like DLF tried to make things better for its citizens by installing pumps to drain accumulated water, but that provided only partial solution.
With growing population and increasing number of homes in Gurgaon, the HUDA needs to wake up and do the basic task of installing a proper drainage in the city. As residents of Gurgaon we can only hope that monsoon 2011 will not bring back the same nightmarish experience of the past year. After buying homes worth crores in this city we can expect basic infrastructure facilities in place.
