Mock Drill Expose Gaps in Gurgaon Mall Security

Mock drill conducted by Gurgaon police revealed serious security lapse in 12 Gurgaon shopping malls, leaving security administration embarrassed and police baffled. It is of high concern for the safety of shoppers, especially with festive season coming up.

The secret drill was conducted on Wednesday in 12 popular malls in which disguised police men walked unobstructed with dummy bombs and revolver. Security guards were unable to spot these men, hardly noticing the dummy weapons. Even more shocking was that dummy weapons were not discovered even hours later, when abandoned inside malls.

This shocking security collapse has revealed that the mall authorities are not at all serious about the security arrangements and safety of shoppers. Commissioner of Gurgaon, Deswal said, “Security gadgets like CCTV cameras and metal detectors failed to spot the firearms that our teams were hiding. As seen from some of the CCTV footage, even frisking was not done in any of the malls.”

Deswal further informed media that they had warned mall security authorities and administration to work up the measures for better security system in May and July. However, this mock drill suggests otherwise and won’t be taken lightly by Gurgaon police. Mock drill is still a warning to mall authorities and in case they fail, police will be forced to initiate actions against them.

The drill was a consequence of a meeting held on Wednesday with NASSCOM officials. 12 teams that participated in drill included members of various RWAs.

Meanwhile, mall authorities have no comments on the issue, embarrassed by open disclosure of their security status.

Since security guards and gadgets are just a part of show-off in big, glittery malls, public should trust themselves for their own safety. However, such shocking revelations don’t change the shopping trends, so to be noticed. In case these weapons turns out to be real, god forbid, public will be left on their own for their protection.

It is a serious matter and should be looked upon with high concern and consideration for public, especially when festive season and elections are on head. Public security is a critical aspect of any administration and should not be neglected. But so much for words and criticism, mall authorities seem to have big pockets for dazzling lights and air-conditioned atmosphere yet nothing but fashionable gadgets and uniformed guards for security with no real purpose to serve.

Though police had taken appropriate steps to find out the chinks in security in popular malls in Gurgaon, it is yet to be seen that how much mall authorities will take it seriously.
