Gurgaon, the millennium city of India offers a modern lifestyle to its residents. But is staying healthy in Gurgaon an easy task? How feasible is it to keep yourself fit while staying in Gurgaon.
Due to its proximity to Delhi, presence of industries, and large scale construction work going on, the level of pollution in Gurgaon is ever increasing. The amount of dust particles available in the air of Gurgaon had kept the pollution on rise and given birth to air borne allergies in adults and children.
Mrs. Sakshi Talwar, a resident of Hamilton Court in DLF IV, Gurgaon, complains that allergy from dust in the air is one of the major reasons for the chronic illness of her 4 year old daughter. The family shifted from USA some 2 years back. Sakshi says that “my daughter never suffered such intensive incidents of cold, cough, and congestion till they shifted to India. Doctor has advised the child to avoid dust exposure as much as possible.
Cases of such chronic illness due allergy from pollution is very common in Gurgaon. Rhinitis, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), asthma, bronchitis, etc are common diseases affecting the general population of Gurgaon, specially children.
Is it easy to stay healthy in Gurgaon amidst the amount of pollution that exists here? On entering any doctor’s clinic in Gurgaon you will realize that most of the patients are there to treat cold, cough, bronchitis, rhinitis and other air borne diseases.
The question whether staying healthy in Gurgaon is easy or not evokes a very mixed response. While one set of people curse the polluted atmosphere of Gurgaon, there are handful of people who feel that staying healthy in Gurgaon is easier as compared to a big city.
Manish Singhal, a 32 year old Software Engineer has his office in Udyog Vihar. He stays in DLF I from where it takes him 15-20 minutes to commute to his office. Because of less travel time required to reach office, Manish can spare reasonable amount of time on an exercise regimen in the morning. According to Manish, when he was staying in Delhi he started for office at 7:30 in morning. That left him with no time to spend on his health. But due to short travel time in Gurgaon he can walk, jog, or exercise in the morning and easily stay fit.
Another good thing about Gurgaon is that there are a number of good options available when it comes to gym, yoga classes, meditation center, and other fitness centers. Most of the localities have a well equipped gym with experienced instructors. Most of the societies have well maintained parks good for walking or exercising in open air. It’s easy to find a fitness center at a stone’s throw distance.
So when it comes to staying healthy in Gurgaon there are both the opinions. The pollution level due to dust is high and results in diseases related to lung and respiratory system. On the other hand, due to less distances and availability of good fitness options, it’s easy to maintain ones health.
