Women Exclusive Autos in Gurgaon

Safety of women has finally become a priority for Gurgaon police. After the abduction of a BPO worker from Gurgaon and her killing in Dhaula Kuan by a cab driver, and similar such incidents, the administration of Gurgaon finally realizes that the women of this city need some extra protection. As an initiative to provide a safe environment to the ladies, women exclusive autos have been launched in Gurgaon.

Gurgaon, although acclaimed as an international city, does not boast of a sound public transport. However, after the recent introduction of Metro rail and Radio Auto, the situation has slightly improved. But recently Gurgaon police decided to do its bit for the women living in Gurgaon. On December 16th, 2010, women special autos were launched by Gurgaon police.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner S S Deswal, announced that 12 women special autos will be launched first. This will initially be launched on a pilot basis and later more number of autos will be added according to the requirement. These autos can be found at the 4 metro stations of Gurgaon. The drivers of these autos will be verified by Gurgaon police. The police are also open to the idea of hiring women drivers for these autos.

To give a unique identity to these autos they are pink in color with “women special” written at the back. Because pink is a color associated with females, these autos can be easily identified.

Knowing the huge number of female workers in Gurgaon and lack of law and order in the city, this initiative should have come much earlier. Gurgaon has a large number of BPOs, IT firms, and MNCs with huge number of female employees. In absence of a safe and sound transport network, the females are either dependant on unsafe rickshaws, or taxis which are too expensive. In the given scenario, women special autos are actually going to be useful. A similar initiative was taken by Delhi metro when it exclusively assigned one coach for females.

With increasing incidents of eve-teasing, and molestation, it’s becoming troublesome for Gurgaon women to travel in shared transport system that are crowded. Ladies special autos will provide comfort to women while travelling.

With such good initiatives, Gurgaon is on way to become a better and safe city.
